Privacy Policy

Memento Vivere (mementovivere.ai) answers questions with passages from Marcus Aurelius, Seneca and Epictetus. This policy explains what we collect when you use it, why, who else handles it and how long we keep it. Memento Vivere is run by Nicolaus Inc, doing business as D2CEBL, a Florida company (“we”).

The short version

• You don’t need an account, and we don’t ask who you are.
• We keep your questions and our answers so the app can handle follow-ups and so we can improve it. They aren’t linked to your name, email address or IP address.
• To write an answer, we send your question and the conversation so far to OpenAI and Google. Neither uses it to train its models.
• We use Google Analytics to see how people use the site.
• We don’t sell your information or show ads.

What we collect

Your questions and our answers. When you ask a question, we store it on our server with the answer, the passages we found and the time. Follow-ups are stored in the same conversation. Each conversation has a random ID. Your browser keeps that ID only until you close the tab, so a reload doesn’t lose the conversation. We don’t store your IP address or any account details with a conversation.

Many questions touch on health, grief or relationships. Please leave out your name and anything else that could identify you or someone else.

Feedback. If you mark an answer as helpful or not helpful, we store that with the answer.

Messages you send us. If you use the contact form, we receive your name, email address and message.

Analytics. Google Analytics records the pages you view, how you arrived and how long you stay, your browser and device, and your approximate location, such as your city. It sets two cookies, _ga and _ga_<ID>, which last up to 2 years unless you delete them. Google says Google Analytics 4 doesn’t log or store IP addresses.

We’ve also turned on Google signals. For visitors who are signed in to a Google account with ad personalization turned on, Google adds information such as age range and interests to our reports, and connects visits from different devices. We see this only as totals, never for an individual visitor.

Server logs. Like most websites, our server records each request: your IP address, browser type, the page requested and the time. These logs don’t contain your questions. We keep them for 14 days to keep the site secure and working.

Apart from Google Analytics, the site sets no cookies.

How we use it

• To answer your questions, including follow-ups.
• To check and improve the answers: we read conversations and feedback, and we measure speed and cost.
• To publish studies about how well the app works. Studies report totals, and examples only in paraphrased form with identifying details removed. We never publish a question word for word.
• To reply to your messages.
• To understand how people use the site.
• To keep the site secure and prevent abuse.

Who else handles your information

These services help us run Memento Vivere. Each handles your information only to provide its service to us.

• OpenAI writes the answers. It receives your question, the conversation so far and the passages we found. OpenAI doesn’t use this data to train its models, and keeps it for up to 30 days to check for abuse, unless the law requires longer.
• Google (Gemini API) helps find the passages for your question and turns a follow-up into a standalone question. It receives your question and, for follow-ups, the conversation so far. On the paid service we use, Google doesn’t use this data to improve its products, and keeps it for a limited time to detect abuse and meet legal requirements.
• Google Analytics measures how the site is used, as described above. Google explains how it uses this data in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.
• Formspree receives contact form messages and forwards them to us by email.
• DigitalOcean hosts our server and database in the United States.
• Cloudflare delivers the site and protects it from attacks. All traffic to the site passes through it. We also use Cloudflare’s Web Analytics to see how the site is used; see Cloudflare’s privacy policy.

Our server is in the United States, and some of these providers also process data in other countries. So your information may be processed outside the country where you live.

How long we keep it

• Conversations and feedback: 12 months, then deleted.
• Contact messages: as long as we need them to deal with your message and keep a record of it.
• Server logs: 14 days.
• Database backups: 30 days.
• Google Analytics: up to 14 months for data about individual visits. Totals in its reports are kept longer.

Your choices and rights

• You can use Memento Vivere without giving any personal information.
• You can stop Google Analytics from collecting your visits with Google’s opt-out browser add-on, or by blocking or deleting cookies in your browser. Turning off ad personalization in your Google account also leaves you out of Google signals.
• You can ask us to delete a conversation. Because conversations aren’t linked to you, we can find yours only if you tell us enough to identify it, such as the exact question and roughly when you asked it.
• You can ask what information we hold about you, and ask us to correct or delete it. Depending on where you live, you may have other rights, for example under the GDPR or California law, including the right to complain to your data protection authority.

Children

Memento Vivere is for adults. It isn’t meant for anyone under 18, and we don’t knowingly collect information from children.

If we change this policy, we’ll post the new version here and update the date at the top.
